Local weather patterns and temperatures usually do not reach extremes. Key reason: the temperate climate is explained by the fact that the rolling hills and valleys are nestled between two ranges of the Appalachian Mountains. The Unaka range along the southern edge of Greene County borders western North Carolina, has peaks that soar to 4,400 feet. Bays Mountain range, along the northern border, has peaks that rise to 700 feet.
Beautiful forests and productive farmland, all watered by the Nolichucky River and many smaller waterways are strong attractions to the region.
Severe weather does come and is referred to a "memorable weather". Severe flooding in August 2001 caused damage in rural areas that took years to repair. The blizzard of ’93 blew into the county on March 13 and left behind 15-18 inches of snow. A similar snowstorm in January 1997 blanketed parts of Greene County with 15 – 24 inches of snow. Usually snow does not remain on the ground for more than a few days. Very heavy snowstorms are rare. Tornadoes, tropical storms and other severe weather phenomena are extremely rare in Greene County because of its protected inland location.
Greeneville was voted into the “Top 25 mountain towns” and one of 50 Best small southern towns. |
